The socket is not the problem. Every miner in this article draws between 18 and 620 watts, and a European Schuko outlet will carry roughly 2,900 watts continuously. You could run four of them from one wall socket and never trouble the breaker.

The problems are your neighbour's bedroom, your own bedroom in July, your lease, and — the one nobody wants to hear — the arithmetic. At the EU average household electricity price, not one small miner on the market makes money. Not the quiet ones, not the cheap ones, not the efficient ones.

That does not mean don't do it. It means do it for the right reason, which is one of exactly two. This page works through both honestly, with the real numbers. Everything checked 3 September 2026.

What a domestic socket really gives you

The nameplate is a short-duration thermal test value, not a duty rating. Applying the standard 80% continuous-load convention gives 12.8 A on Schuko; practising electricians argue the real continuous figure is nearer 10–12 A depending on how the socket is built. UK practitioners land on about 10.4 A — roughly 2,400 W — for a 13 A outlet running flat out forever. That history is visible in the standard itself: BS 1363-2 tested temperature rise at 14 A until thermal stability, and later revisions had to add explicit continuous-13 A provisions for EV chargers, which only makes sense because ordinary sockets were never assumed to run at maximum indefinitely.

None of which constrains you here. A 620 W miner is 2.7 A. The binding constraint in a flat is the circuit — what else is on that breaker — not the outlet. Find out which breaker your room is on before you plug anything in.

Noise: the number that gets you evicted

This is where apartment mining actually fails, and the regulations are stricter than people expect because they are measured in the wrong place — not at your machine, but in your neighbour's room.

Two consequences worth understanding. In Germany, TA Lärm has Orientierungscharakter in a neighbour dispute — a judge is not bound by it — but persistent noise becomes a Mietmangel under §536 BGB once you notify the landlord, which entitles them to a rent reduction and gives you a problem. In the UK, once noise crosses into statutory nuisance under Part III of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, the council must serve an abatement notice. It is not discretionary.

Now scale it. A 75 dB machine against a 45 dB machine is not "a bit louder". Thirty decibels is 1,000 times the sound intensity and roughly eight times as loud to the human ear. Every full-size ASIC — the Antminer S21, L9, L11, the ElphaPex DG2, the VolcMiner D1 and D3 — sits at 70–75 dB. There is no version of a flat where those are acceptable. The only candidates are machines rated 35–50 dB, and even a 50 dB unit will breach a German 35 dB night limit if it shares a wall with a bedroom.

Heat: a 500 W miner is a 500 W heater, permanently

Essentially all the electricity becomes heat. Domestic heating is sized at roughly 25–45 W per cubic metre to hold 21 °C against a cold outside, so a 12 m² room with a 2.5 m ceiling — 30 m³ — needs about 1,200 W for a full 21-degree lift. A 500 W miner in that room therefore implies roughly an 8–10 °C steady-state rise in winter with the door shut. More in summer.

A miner in an actual bedroom, from someone doing it with a 1,450 W machine: it was 4–7 °C outside and 26.7 °C in the bedroom by morning. A reply put it well — "I'm reading your comment while wiping the sweat off my forehead in my bedroom."

The reason this matters mechanically, not just for comfort, is that small miners have low ambient ceilings:

A 35 °C-rated machine self-heating a small room through a European summer will throttle or fault. Plan a thermostatic cut-off, not a hope. One practical trick people actually use: a plug-in thermostat switch — the machine runs when the room drops below your set point and stops when it climbs.

Your lease, honestly

Residential tenancy agreements can and do restrict premises to residential use, and some now name cryptocurrency mining explicitly. Where such a clause exists a landlord can seek injunctive relief against a tenant who won't stop. Insurance matters too: tenants are often obliged to insure and name the landlord, and mining is treated as elevated risk.

But we should be straight about the limits of that. The clearest reported cases and standard clauses on this are North American and commercial-lease flavoured. We found no reported German, Dutch, French or UK case, and no standard-form domestic clause, specifically banning crypto mining in a flat. Anyone telling you the EU prohibits it is overstating. What is genuinely enforceable in Germany and the UK is the noise route above — and, if your rent includes electricity, a consumption dispute, because your landlord priced that rent on ordinary household use.

The arithmetic, and it is brutal

Eurostat puts the EU household electricity average at €0.2896/kWh for the second half of 2025 — about $0.337/kWh. Here is every apartment-viable machine against that, with the electricity price at which each one breaks even.

Read the break-even column against $0.337. The best machine here needs electricity 2.9 times cheaper than the EU average; the worst needs it twenty times cheaper. There is no configuration, firmware tune or pool switch that closes a gap like that.

So if someone sells you an apartment miner on the promise of a return, check their electricity assumption. It will not be a European domestic tariff.

The two honest reasons to do it anyway

Heat displacement. If you are already heating that room with resistive electric heat, a miner is a heater that also mines. You were going to spend the kilowatt-hours regardless, so the mining revenue is a rebate on heat you wanted. This is the only case where the numbers above stop mattering, and it only works in the months you actually want the heat. Our Bitcoin heater guide covers the purpose-built machines for this.

The lottery. A Bitaxe-class solo miner draws about 18 W and costs a couple of hundred dollars. It will almost certainly never find a block — roughly a 1-in-9,500 chance per year — but if it does, it is the whole block reward. That is a lottery ticket with a running cost of about four euro cents a day, not an investment. Framed that way it is honest and quite fun. Framed as income it is a lie.

What is not an honest reason is expecting yield. If you want a machine to pay for itself, the machine cannot live in your flat — which brings us to the alternative.

The version that actually pays

The whole problem above is one number: $0.337/kWh. Our hosted power starts at $0.0072/kWh — about 47 times cheaper — and the noise, heat, lease and breaker questions all disappear because the machine is not in your home.

Run the same hardware through that and it inverts. You buy the miner outright, we rack it, and it mines to your own pool and wallet. If you are still buying one for the flat

Best if noise is the constraint: the FutureBit Apollo III at $899. Under 35 dB in Eco mode at 150 W, and it is the only sub-35 dB Bitcoin machine made. It is also the least-bad economically. Runs on a C13 lead and 90–240 V, so it works anywhere in Europe without adaptors.

Best if you want the most hashrate that a flat tolerates: the IceRiver KS7 Lite at $638. 4.2 Th/s of Kaspa from 500 W and a normal socket, 50 dB — fine in a utility room or a hallway cupboard, not next to a bedroom wall.

Best for heat displacement: the VolcMiner D1 Mini Pre at $569 or the ElphaPex DG Home 1. Both put out 500–620 W of usable heat and mine Litecoin and Dogecoin together while doing it. Note that VolcMiner's noise spec is quoted anywhere from 45 to 75 dB depending on the vendor; treat the low end sceptically until you have measured your own unit.

Do not buy for a flat: anything above 700 W, anything rated 70 dB or more, and the Goldshell AL-BOX III on economics — it is quiet at 35 dB but its break-even of 1.7 cents per kWh is twenty times below what you pay.

The flat is the problem, not the miner
