VolcMiner in 2026: the D3, D1 Pro and the truth about Scrypt economics

Here is the fact that reframes Scrypt mining, and almost nobody leads with it: Dogecoin is 85% of the revenue. Litecoin — the chain everyone names the algorithm after — contributes about 15%. A Scrypt miner is a Dogecoin machine that happens to pay a Litecoin dividend.

That matters more than it sounds. The Litecoin halving lands in July 2027 and every forum post treats it as a cliff. Because LTC is only 15% of what a Scrypt miner earns, halving it cuts total revenue by roughly 7.7%, not 50%. Dogecoin has no halving at all — a flat 10,000 DOGE per block, forever.

How merge mining actually works

Litecoin is the parent chain. Your miner builds an LTC block whose coinbase commits a hash of a Dogecoin block header, then tests a single Scrypt hash against both difficulty targets at once. Clear Dogecoin's easier target and you submit a DOGE block using the Litecoin header as its proof of work. Clear Litecoin's and you get an LTC block. One hash, one watt, two chains.

Since 2024 most pools split the rewards, so you receive LTC and DOGE as separate payouts rather than a blended rate. If a calculator quotes you a single "Litecoin" figure, check whether Dogecoin is in it — if it isn't, your real income is about six times higher than the number on screen.

What Scrypt pays right now

We cross-checked that from first principles: Litecoin issues 3,600 LTC/day across 2.55 PH/s, Dogecoin 14.4m DOGE/day across 3.32 PH/s. The two methods agree within 3%.

One caution about pool-published forecasts. A widely-cited 2026 profitability outlook from a major pool built its numbers on LTC at $78.80 and DOGE at $0.14 — both roughly 40% above where they actually trade today. Any projection you read from late 2025 is running hot.

The VolcMiner range

VolcMiner is a Chinese manufacturer that entered the market in October 2024 and builds Scrypt machines exclusively. Worth knowing before you shop: the official manufacturer site is volcminer.com. Several similar domains on other TLDs are independent resellers, not the factory, and buyer complaints about undelivered orders attach to one of those rather than to the hardware. Buy from a vendor you can identify.

Is VolcMiner actually competitive?

Yes — with one precise caveat.

The arithmetic on the D1 Pro: 20 × $0.4388 = $8.78/day gross. It draws 3.7 kW, so 88.8 kWh/day. Break-even is 8.78 ÷ 88.8 = $0.0989/kWh.

The caveat. Bitmain's hydro L11 line still leads outright at 0.165 J/MH. But among air-cooled machines — the ones you can actually deploy without a liquid loop — the VolcMiner D3 at 0.179 J/MH is the most efficient Scrypt miner you can buy. It edges the air L11 (0.184) and VolcMiner's own D1 Pro (0.185). For a manufacturer two years old, beating Bitmain on air cooling is a real result.

About that "low noise" claim

VolcMiner markets the D1 as a quiet machine. Check it properly before you plan around it.

The full-size units — D1, D1 Pro and D3 — are listed at 75 dB, identical to the Antminer L9, L11 and ElphaPex DG2. These are not quiet machines and nothing about them belongs in a home.

The claim is real for two products only. The D1 Hydro is 50 dB because the noise goes into a liquid loop. And the D1 Mini Pre is genuinely quiet — an independent review measured 45 dBA at 25°C, though ASIC Miner Value lists 55 dB and at least one retailer claims 35 dB with nothing to back it. Take 45–55 dB as the honest range. At 500 W it runs from an ordinary socket, which is what makes it the one VolcMiner most people can actually live with. The number that decides everything

Look down the break-even column again. Nothing on that list clears 11 cents per kWh. The best hydro Bitmain manages $0.111. The best air-cooled machine manages $0.102.

Typical European domestic electricity runs 25–35 cents. US residential runs 12–17. At those rates every Scrypt ASIC in production loses money every hour it is powered on — the D1 Pro loses roughly $8.88 a day at 10 cents. There is no firmware tune or pool switch that closes a gap that size.

Scrypt is therefore a hosted-power category, not a home-mining one. Our cheapest facility runs at $0.0072/kWh. At that rate the D3 grosses $8.78 and pays about $0.62 in electricity, leaving roughly $8.16 a day — against a machine that would bleed money on any domestic tariff. That difference is the whole business case, and it is worth running through the calculator with your own figures.

Which VolcMiner to buy

Best economics: the D3 at $5,754. Most efficient air-cooled Scrypt miner available, and priced below the roughly $5,990 street price we found elsewhere.

Best value per dollar: the D1 Pro at $5,014. Six thousandths of a J/MH behind the D3 for around $740 less — on a three-year hold the efficiency gap costs you less than the price gap saves.

Best for a first machine: the D1 Mini Pre at $569. 500 W, genuinely quiet, and its 0.227 J/MH is better than the full-size D1's 0.230 — you are not paying an efficiency penalty for the small form factor, which is unusual.

Think twice about: the older D1 at 18.5 Gh/s. At 0.230 J/MH it is a generation behind the D3 for not much less money. Buy it only if the discount is steep.
