Zcash was up 1,869% over twelve months when we checked on 26 August 2026 — from $40.24 at the end of August 2025 to $788. It is the best-performing major proof-of-work coin of the cycle, and almost nobody is writing about mining it.
That silence is partly justified. Equihash mining in 2026 is a narrow, slightly strange business: four viable machines, none newer than mid-2023, one chain to point them at, and an active research programme that could eventually make all of them worthless. This guide gives the real numbers and the real risks.

Where Zcash actually stands, August 2026

Two corrections to figures you will see repeated elsewhere.
The miner reward is 1.25 ZEC, not 1.5625. The second halving in November 2024 cut the block reward from 3.125 to 1.5625 ZEC. But NU6.1, which activated on 24 November 2025, routes 8% to Zcash Community Grants and 12% to a coinholder fund — leaving miners 80% of 1.5625, or 1.25 ZEC. Any calculator still using 1.5625 overstates your revenue by a quarter.
Network hashrate estimates vary widely — Blockchair reported 25.64 GSol/s, ASIC Miner Value 27.85, and 2CryptoCalc 30.33 on the same day. Treat any single figure with suspicion and model a range.
What the four Equihash machines actually earn
Figures below assume ZEC at $788.12 and network conditions on 26 August 2026, scaled from ASIC Miner Value's ZEC yield. Mining numbers move fast — re-check before buying.

Those break-even numbers on the Z15 pair are remarkable. At $0.455 and $0.494 per kWh, the Z15 and Z15 Pro are profitable at UK and EU domestic electricity prices — something almost no Bitcoin miner can claim. UK domestic sits around $0.33/kWh; both Z15 models clear it.
That is entirely a function of ZEC's price run. If ZEC halves, so do those break-evens.
Efficiency: the Z15 pair is in a different class

The Z15 pair is roughly 3.1 to 3.4 times more efficient than the A9 pair. That gap is the entire buying decision at anything above very cheap power.
One specific point worth stating plainly, because it affects what you should pay: the A9++ produces 140 kSol/s at the same 1,550W as the A9+ produces 120 kSol/s. Same power, 16.7% more hashrate. The A9++ is strictly the better machine and should never cost more than the A9+. We price ours accordingly — the A9++ at $595 against the A9+ at $1,761 reflects that, though we would say the A9+ is the one to avoid rather than the A9++ being a bargain.
There is nowhere else to point these machines
This is the risk most Zcash mining content skips entirely.
Equihash 200,9 is a narrow algorithm, and in 2026 Zcash is effectively the only coin using it with any value. 2CryptoCalc lists Zcash at 100% of Equihash miner share.
The alternatives evaporated:
- Horizen (ZEN) ended proof-of-work entirely and migrated to Base on 23 July 2025. This was the main fallback chain and it no longer exists as a mining target. Any guide still listing ZEN as a Z15 option is out of date — and that includes ASIC Miner Value's own headline "$/day" figures for the Z15, which are computed against Horizen. Ignore them.
- Komodo and Hush price at $0.00/day.
- BitcoinZ uses Equihash 144,5 and Ycash a different parameter set again — neither runs on a Z15.
The practical consequence: an idle Z15 has no fallback. If Zcash's price falls or the chain changes consensus, the hardware has no second life. Compare that to a Bitcoin ASIC, which can at least point at Bitcoin Cash, Fractal Bitcoin or a dozen other SHA-256 chains.
The proof-of-stake question — stated honestly
You will find claims online that Zcash is "moving to proof of stake." That is an oversimplification in both directions, so here is the accurate position as of late August 2026.
Crosslink, the project from Shielded Labs, is a hybrid design that adds proof-of-stake finality on top of proof-of-work. It does not remove mining. As of the ZecHub Arborist Call on 25 June 2026 it was at Milestone 4, running on a FeatureNet, with ZIPs still being drafted and no mainnet date.
Separately, there is an active advocacy thread in the Zcash community forum arguing for a full move to proof of stake. That is a live governance debate, not a decided outcome.
What this means for a buyer: you are purchasing single-algorithm hardware, with no alternative coin, for a chain where replacing proof-of-work is under genuine discussion. That is not a reason to avoid Zcash mining — the current economics are strong — but it is a reason to prefer a short payback horizon over a four-year hold.
The hardware is old, and nothing new is coming

No Equihash ASIC has been released since June 2023. The Z15 Pro is still the newest machine on the algorithm, three years on. Innosilicon has shipped nothing on Equihash since 2019.
Practically that means: expect PSU capacitor failure and fan bearing wear as the common faults, and hashboard solder fatigue on the older A9s. Spare parts come from donor units, not from manufacturers. Treat all four as out-of-warranty from the factory regardless of what a listing claims — our own terms are on the delivery and returns page. So who should mine Zcash in 2026?
Yes, if: you have power at or below $0.05/kWh, you buy a Z15 Pro for its efficiency, and you are working to a payback horizon under six months. At current prices that is roughly where the maths lands, and it is a genuinely good return.
Marginal: the standard Z15. It works and its break-even is nearly as good, but it produces half the hashrate for a similar purchase price, so payback is slower.
No, if: you are looking at the A9 pair at retail electricity. Break-evens of $0.127 and $0.148 per kWh put them under water at any normal European domestic tariff. They only make sense on hosted or industrial power — which is what our facilities are for, from $0.014/kWh.
And in every case: size the position knowing that ZEC is trading at $788 after a run that included a 50% drawdown in 48 hours in June 2026, when a four-year-old bug in the Orchard shielded pool was disclosed. It was patched without exploitation, but the volatility is real.
